On August 26, 2026, a catastrophic glacier collapse in the Himalayan mountains triggered a massive avalanche of ice and rock into the Bhote Koshi River. The debris temporarily dammed the river before violently giving way, sending a devastating torrent of water and debris through communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river valleys.

The impact is staggering:

• More than 1,200 lives lost

• More than 4,000 people still missing

• Approximately 1.6 million people directly impacted

• More than 14,000 people isolated in some of the hardest-hit communities

• Nearly 10,000 children experiencing disruptions to their education

Homes, farms, businesses, roads, bridges, health facilities, hydropower facilities, and other critical infrastructure have suffered extensive damage. In some communities, road access, electricity, and communications remain disrupted, making it especially difficult to reach those in need.

In response, the United Church of Christ, through Global HOPE and Global Ministries, is supporting relief efforts led by ACT Alliance and local Global Ministries partners. Together, they are helping provide shelter, food and nutrition, clean water and sanitation, education, and mental health and psychosocial support to affected communities.
